Welcome to the IWCE-5 HomePage! You will find here information about this conference and about travel to Notre Dame. Please check back frequently since these pages are continually being updated.


The conference will cover all aspects of advanced simulation of electronic transport in semiconductors and semiconductor devices, particularly those which use large computational resources. The scientific program, organized in a single-session format, will consist of invited lectures, contributed talks, and poster presentations.

The workshop is intended to be an international forum for the discussion on the current trends and the future directions of computational electronics. The emphasis of the contributions will be on interdisciplinary aspects of Computational Electronics, encompassing Applied Physics, Engineering and Applied Mathematics. Active participation of graduate students, including student presentations, is strongly encouraged.

Previous IWCE meetings were held at the Beckman Institute of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (May 1992), the University of Leeds, UK (August 1993), Portland, Oregon (May 1994), and Tempe, Arizona (October/November 1995).



Optoelectronics: What experimental results are poorly predicted by currently-used rate equation models? What will a desirable simulation and optimization tool have to offer? What are the most important laser diodes that need to be simulated? What new models need to be developed for microcavity lasers.

Monte Carlo Simulation: What remains to be developed in the area of advanced Monte Carlo models? Are further standardization efforts necessary? Are the available device simulation codes sufficient for technological applications?

Nanostructure Simulation: The atomistic understanding of the dynamics of nanostructures and its relation to atomistic processes in conventional devices (such as degradation effects) will be a new topic of discussion in addition to the more conventional simulation approaches for nanostructures.

Contributed papers must be based on recent, unpublished work. Authors are invited to submit 15 camera-ready copies of abstracts by 14 February '97 to:

The abstract (including title, authors, and institutions) should be typed on a single standard (A3 or A4) sheet of paper with 1 inch margins. The corresponding author should be identified and full address, FAX number, and e-mail address should be provided.

Notification of acceptance will be sent by 31 March '97.


The conference proceedings will appear as a special issue of VLSI design. Papers will be due at the beginning of the workshop with regular refereeing taking place during the meeting. Final manuscripts will be due approximately one month after the workshop.


The workshop will be held in the Center for Continuing Education (CCE) on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. Notre Dame is located next to the city of South Bend in Northern Indiana, about 100 miles East of Chicago. The CCE is just a few minutes by taxi from the South Bend airport.


A block of rooms has been reserved in the Morris Inn on the Notre Dame campus, directly across the street from the conference center. Economical air-conditioned rooms will also be available in a close-by and newly-constructed dormitory.

The registration fee will be $225 before 30 April '97.
($275 after 30 April '97)

This fee includes: Welcome reception, meals and refreshments, conference banquet, abstract booklet, and conference proceedings.

Special student registration is available at the above rate which includes regular registration plus dormitory accommodation for the three nights of May 27-29.

Student participation is strongly encouraged and approximately 15 stipends of $400 each will be given for travel support.
